The Tattooed Arm' - ERIC SHAHAN

This is an original publication in the landscape of Japanese tattoo books. A translation of a 19th century manga by Shikitei Sanba (1810), this little book tells the whimsical story of a group of men getting tattooed in the city of Edo by one of its greatest artists. The realism with which the tattoo designs are done is so faithful that the drawings come to life and go on an adventure in the Japanese capital. A great deal of effort has been put into the translation (into English) by the author Eric Shahan, a professional translator based in Japan, in order to make the ancient language understandable and to explain the context of the time. The book is also illustrated by an artist of the Utagawa school, well known for his affection for tattoos... This is a must-read for all horimono enthusiasts.
