"The Obsessed - Otaku, tribes and subcultures of Japan

Even before the term "geek" was used, the Japanese term "otaku" was already used in the 1990s to describe those manga and anime fans who obsessively lived their passion. In 2022, the book "The Obsessed" (in English) takes stock of this heritage, through a gallery of portraits (beautifully photographed by Irwin Wong) of cosplay, hip-hop, gothic and traditional tattoo enthusiasts, who continue to irrigate pop culture, alternative cultures and urban tribes in Japan. Horiren 1, one of the few practising tattoo artists in the archipelago, talks about her attachment to irezumi but also her spiritual commitment and the motivations that led her to become a Buddhist nun.
