« L'Inde sous la peau », de Stéphane Guillerme

Achievement of 7 years on the road, travelling and studying indian tattoo art in many shapes, « L'inde sous la peau » is a book edited by the photographer Stephane Guillerme, out one year ago which study what is tattooing in india through many times and many regions.

The author is travelling for thirty years and met india's country twenty years ago, but few books after all and wondering leads him to indian tattoo. His photographs are rich and profound and highlight an esthetic and the achievement of many years of spiritual study. In five years and one year per geographic zone, Stephane covered the country. Recesses or megalopolis, nothing escapes from him, he has even been tattooed by Badi's tattooer in the same condition as Baigas women in Madya Pradesh. An intense experience !

To finish, preface of this book has been written by an indian tattoo artist, a « star » in his country and friend of Stephane Guillerme : Manjeet Singh. First painter for advertiser than tattoo artist. From tribal societies to modern, this book is exploring old acceptance of tattooing or new rejections of it. Identity symbol or citizen, tattoo in India is a prism with multiple entrance and point of view. This is a good entry to a magnificient illustrated way that offers to us Stephane Guillerme.

Art in the skin ! An exhibition by The Sakura Galery

The Sakura Art Galery choosed to highlight tattooing, with a ton of pop culture, humor and relexion. Tattooing as an art by himself has his own styles and artistic genders. We can find in this exhibit some kind of pop tattooing fresh and fun, spirit, gathering 32 different artists together.

Tattooing is seen here by the pop artists point of view, a way to review in the meantime in a modern way, graphic or photographic way. Billy Butcher, Ramon Maiden or Juliette Teal are all interesting by there own review of skin's ink. Moreover some artists are the subject of a much more profund relexion as Redape or Ramon Maiden from the galery.

Opening night on thursday 9th November from 6 pm to 10 pm, with artists. Photocall , body painting and cocktails and also sort of tiny shooting of the most beautiful tattoos around.

Blacktop tattooing Vol. 1 Text : TD

Blacktop tattooing was created by Gabriele Greco in 2015 with the willpower to promote old school tattoo and specially black trad' ones. After looking for and explore the internet, to promote the work of many international tattoo artists, Blacktop tattooing asked finaly to some of them a contribution into a new project.

In particular this project they have been asked to contribute is to create a full back or torso in black ink only. All those draws together are now the Blacktop tattooing Vol.1 which put together the work of some of the greatest traditionnal and international artists as Florian Santus, Pedro Soos, Davide TC, Joel Soos, Jaca, Dane Mancini and more ! Totally there is more than 70 artists represented in this book.

« The Last Mambabatok » : le tatouage Kalinga, ne mourra pas

Apo Whang-Od is the name of a 99 years old woman, last Mambabatok tattoo artist – a name given to the tattoo craftmans from the Butbut tribe, Philippine, exercising handpoke tattoo. Last one to overcome the expertise of traditionnal Kalinga tattoo, she 's got now her first heiress.

Last artist of her generation to own the knowledge of Kalinga tattoos, culture and community retreat in the Lyzon in Philippine, Apo Wang-Od found in her niece Grace her heiress to pass on this ancestral knowledge. Considered as the biggest Mambabatok artist of her generation, Apo Wang-Od became a widow at only 25 years old, without any child left but she need to transfer her heritage. Many videos and articles came out online especially via the BBC, rised above this women to be a huge contributor to the pilippin heritage. An heritage which would have been extinct by this time if Apo wouldn't have start to teach her little-niece Grace Palincas, this craft. The heiress, Apo is taking care of, is the only one to allowed this tradition to persist trough a new generation. Grace is learning this delicacy technic, which has to be transmitted only to real Mambabatok descendent. Warriors pride symbols or elegance and beauty marks on Kalingas women, the young tattooer learned through many archives to recreat every single ancient Kalinga's design.

Practiced in Batol, a technic which consist to get the ink under the skin with a long spiked, tapped at a spead of nearly 100 strokes per minute, kalinga's tattoo was born nearly a millenium ago. Really painfull, but not enough to prevent many tourist to get it and test their « self-control ». Apo Whanf-Od is pointed it in the meantime in this amazing documentary ; its really important for the town to keep this tradition but also to get tourists back in her perched town of the amazing Cordillère of the north countryside.

« The Last Mambabatok », short-film and documentary shooted by Brent Foster, showed how it is important to continue this tradition for a whole community. This story takes place in the heart of the heritage concept, it's also a big part of the project ; « While I'm Here The Project » where Brent Forster and his team, tell stories of man and women with extraodinary life and document this real unknown living legacy.

Ink The Art of Tattoo has been published by Vicionnary, editor of art and design books in Hong Kong. As an art book, it has a black leather cover but inside it is mixing both flash sheets, interviews and photo shoots. The book is focused on styles evolution as old school and dotwork. Available with three different covers this book should be on each inked person's shelter.

With a particular attention dedicated to those three book covers presented, this book gather 288 pages and 700 flashs, brand new or classic patterns and illustrations. It is an enormous source of inspiration for any passionate inked person. Presented as a design retrospective introducing tattoo in his contemporary shape so as a claim or a decoration. All together, this book is catching us with this powerfull content. Different kind of tattoo styles pass on those pages showing an art marked by a black ink and a certain evolution to a contemporary mix of pop and modern influences, with a large spectrum. We can actually admire those on a thick paper with the texture of a drawing paper , so a really great and creative initiative.
