Interview Véronique Imbo

@pascalbagot

Specialised in realism, of which she is one of the most talented representatives at present, Canadian tattoo artist Véronique Imbo is developing a personal universe inspired as much by classical painting as by gangsta-rap.

You are known for your work in realism, when and why did you decide to focus on this style?

I started focusing on realism about 10 years ago, because it was very close to painting, which is a passion of mine.

Your work is very delicate. How do you work?

I use FK Irons machines, in black and grey a Xion and EXo and for colour the Flux. I like Kwadron cartridges for liners and round shader, rather Cheyenne for magnums. I use Worlds Famous Ink colours, and for after care Dermalize.

What subjects do you naturally turn to?

In black and grey I like to do portraits of women or religious images. In colour, I'm more interested in iconographic subjects and anything related in some way to gangster rap.

Do you prefer to work in colour or in black & white?

I am often asked this question! My preference depends on the subject but I like both. However, I find some subjects easier to work on in colour and others in black and grey. And I love doing small portraits as much as I love doing a back piece!

You were talking about gangsta rap, and you’re actually doing a lot of rapper portraits. What place has this music in your musical culture

I’m a fan. I like that time and everything related to it. I also have a portrait in color of 2pac done by Mashkow!

Portraiture is a subject you favour, why?

Because it's close to the classical arts, to the painting and drawing classes I took.

Memory, drama, etc., the portrait often carries strong stories with it. How do you approach it?

I try to go further than the representation of the family photo to put the client's idea into images.

There are a lot of very good portrait tattoo artists, how can you distinguish yourself from the others ?

There are a lot of very good tattoo artists in the real world and it's not easy to stand out. You have to find a personal touch and explore what you can do with it.

Where do you think is the best place to place a portrait?

I like the side of the calf or the inside of the forearm because they are flat areas. + Loveless Tattoo, Montréal, Canada www.lovelesstattoo.ca IG studio : @lovelesstattoo IG Véronique : @veroniqueimbo
